JAKE/JOSS: TOO RUSHED

As written by GHH member, lcarey20

I agree with everyone who feels that this storyline is rushed (because it is!).  There just isn't the impact for us to be involved in Joss' illness. It looks like it's going to be over in a blink of an eye, her "cure" is there in the form of poor little Jake's kidney.

I thought Rebecca Herbst was phenomenal on Friday and today. She looked to me like a mother who was shattered and desperately trying to hold on to hope that her little boy was going to make it. ...

TOO MUCH OF A BAD THING......can be a bad thing.

I actually think--as horrid and heart wrenching as it is--that the Jake story that's playing out represents the power of soaps at their best. These three parents are so much a part of our daily lives that we ache with and for them, and these actors, who get so little respect in the greater world of television, are knocking it out of the park. In fact, Rebecca Herbst is doing such a superb job injecting reality into the high melodrama of a soap that her per...

THE "SAVING" OF ABBY

Posted by on Tuesday, February 8, 2011,
As written by GHH member, TVacademic

There's this underlying message that does not sit [well] with me... It's the "saving" of Abby.  First, there's the set up: as a stripper, she, of course, hates her job and has low self-worth.  These elements are not fully troubling (though suspect) on their own, but are then further blurred by the question of prostitution--does she or does she not sell herself for sex, and should we or should we not equate these two things?  Even the presumption that prosti...

FEBRUARY 1st: A BALANCING ACT

What a well balanced show today.  First we get a defining moment for Lucky and Siobhan, then Jax and Carly confront their marriage, Jason and Michael connect over the rape and Brenda talks to Dante about the baby.  Four stories, four relationships all moving ahead and getting quality scenes with the actors really bringing their A game.

I know that this can't happen every day but when it does General Hospital is riveting.  No explosions, no gun battles, just pe...

A CONVERSATION ON SOAPS AND WOMEN

Posted by on Monday, January 3, 2011,
Excerpted from the writings of the following GHH members:

I do think that soaps fall behind where women are concerned... Certain antiquated beliefs are mainstays. For example, women are still seen largely as needing to be saved--most often from themselves--and those who attempt to be their own saviors almost always fail...The woman-power shows of the '90's seem to be a fairy tale now...

Some thoughts I've been having about GH and about homes. We can start with the not-terribly earth-s...

ON MUSIC

I have to admit that I generally find the music played on General Hospital to be cringe-worthy. If the recordings played are unfamiliar, they are most often helmed by the types of mainstream vanilla pop or faux rock musicians that one hears played on whatever super hits radio station is owned by Clear Channel in your area. If they are covers of the classics, they are stripped of the soul and substance of the original. I am a big fan of a good cover. GH rare...

THE BIG PICTURE

Posted by on Sunday, January 2, 2011,

As a long time viewer and fan of GH, I always try to look at the big picture.  I don't get that invested in individual characters and surely have given up on couples that come and go so quickly.  I have to admit that the writing tends to blow things up for no reason without any thought to how it will be perceived in a few months, forget a couple of years.

That being said, I must say that lately I have seen some positive signs.  Of course, the introduction of A...

THE MICHAEL AND ABBY CONTROVERSY

Posted by on Monday, December 13, 2010,
As written by GHH member, TVacademic

Just have to jump in on the Michael and Abby discussion...

First, it's disturbing that Abby is so easily villaiinized because of her life choices.  What's interesting to me about Abby (though I must admit that "stripper with heart of gold" is a trope I'd most like left behind) is that she, too, has clearly been raped.  And since that seems to be what happened to Michael, she recognizes certain emotional complexities in him.  It's dangerous to conflate sexua...

FLAWED PERFECTION

The thing I adore about Dante Falconeri is his sense of honor.  The very first glimpse we saw of this storyline [involving Brenda] was when he was in a drugged state [due to Brook Lynn] and blurted, “we promised not to tell”, to Lulu. For me that was the first indication of his inner turmoil over what he silently carried for three years. Nothing EASY about it at all. In today’s flashback [11/9] he said, “I’ll make this okay, I promise”. There was t...

FORGOTTEN CONNECTIONS

As written by GHH member, genhos63

Brenda goes to visit Edward, that is wonderful, she talks about Lila which is sweet, but let's get real here, Alan died in 2008, AJ in 2005 and Lila in 2004, so why no mention of them?  Brenda loved Alan and AJ, she certainly knows they are dead and their deaths are more recent, so the scene was disrespectful to the Quartermaine history on GH.  Why wasn't Edward talking about Brook Lynn so Brenda will know she's in town and maybe go see her-- but no!!  ...

WHAT DO WE WANT FROM OUR SOAPS?

Posted by on Tuesday, October 26, 2010,
As written by GHH member, Rooanne

I'm wondering what it is most people want to see on a soap.   From reading just some recent comments [in our forum], for instance, there seem to be more or less two "camps";  those who want their soap to be an escape, such as out-there capers with the mob and the cops, and those who want to see more 'real life' type stories, such as illness in the hospital and couples who are not always in angst.

I like the idea of meta-awareness -- I guess you could say it wou...

THE LITTLE THINGS

Posted by on Thursday, October 21, 2010,
As written by GHH member, Shayla

Sometimes it's just the little things that get to me. Yesterday, when Michael was sitting all alone at Kelly's, it broke my heart. I couldn't help but reflect on his childhood and all he has been through. My anger and disgust runs deep for all the adults in his life (and some have been and are my favorites) but I feel they have, and are failing Michael now. I remember all the lying and fighting between Sonny and AJ and Carly and Jason and the Quartermaine's and...

OLD HABITS DIE HARD--A STUDY OF GH'S SINGLETONS

Posted by on Saturday, October 16, 2010,
As written by GHH member, TVAcademic

I'm bothered...a lot...by the corresponding Lisa and Claire story lines.  These are semiotic stories, not based on character but on symbol, and they therefore scream some messages that I think we, as a community of women living in a post-feminist world, should be philosophically concerned with.  They are as follows:

  • A man's bedroom prowess can turn an otherwise reasonable woman into a vengeful demon;
  • Women who put all their attention on their career have made...
