Meet my cousin, Rebecca Gomperts

Posted by ghhshirley on Tuesday, June 30, 2015,
Rebecca is my cousin on my mother's side; my late mother's maiden name was Gomperts. Like my late uncle, Rebecca is a doctor. However, she is much more than that. Although Rebecca now lives in Holland (she was born and grew up in Suriname, as my mother did, and where I went to kindergarten when my mother's sister was dying), she is now a world-wide champion of women's reproductive rights. Below is a brief trailer of a film dedicated to her efforts, entitled, "Vessel"

Rebecca's group recently l...

The Corporate Commandments

Posted by on Tuesday, July 8, 2014,

In case you have not been keeping up, last Tuesday the Supreme Court expanded their ruling to include ALL forms of birth control. On Thursday, the Supreme Court allowed cases to be revisited where certain Christian entities complained that even filing a form that they would not provide such coverage due to religious objections was a "burden". (Nevermind the fact that having to get a permission slip from your boss for basic healthcare is an insult to women).  However, President Obama punked th...

Renewed Showdown over Texas Anti-Choice Law Highlights State-by-State Battle for Abortion Access

Posted by on Wednesday, October 30, 2013,
A legal battle is being waged in Texas over the controversial new anti-choice law that inspired a people’s filibuster over the summer. This week, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott (who is also running for Governor) has asked a federal appeals court judge to immediately reinstate a key part of the new law a day after it was ruled unconstitutional by a lower court judge.

On Monday, that lower court judge, District Judge Lee Yeakel struck down the provision requiring onerous hospital admittin...

Romney's Agenda is Revealed in the GOP Congress

Posted by on Thursday, October 18, 2012,
If you want to understand Romney's game plan, just look at what Republicans have been doing in Congress.

It was tempting to dismiss Mitt Romney's hard-right turn during the GOP primaries as calculated pandering. In the general election – as one of his top advisers famously suggested – Romney would simply shake the old Etch A Sketch and recast himself as the centrist who governed Massachusetts. But with the selection of vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan, the shape-shifting Romney has lock...

Rolling Stone
lays it out:

It was tempting to dismiss Mitt Romney's hard-right turn during the GOP primaries as calculated pandering. In the general election – as one of his top advisers famously suggested – Romney would simply shake the old Etch A Sketch and recast himself as the centrist who governed Massachusetts. But with the selection of vice-presidential nominee Paul Ryan, the shape-shifting Romney has locked into focus – cementing himself as the frontman for the far-right partisan...

Republican Party Platform Has Women Taking a Giant Step Backwards

Posted by on Tuesday, August 21, 2012,
Extreme positions are no longer contained in the party's fringe but have been elevated to the top of the Republican ticket with the selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate. As further proof, on Tuesday, August 21st, the Republican Platform Committee voted to include as part of their platform the support of an amendment that would ban abortion WITH NO EXCEPTIONS in cases of rape or incest, including when the life of the mother is at stake. That piece of anti-women legislation is r...

A Brilliant & Humorous Musical Parody

Posted by on Wednesday, August 15, 2012,

LYRICS

One Term More!

A time to celebrate democracy,
Repeal Republican hypocrisy.
This man who would unseat Barack's
A bleak choice at the ballot box.
One Term More!
A G.O.P. perdition-bound,
All sense of right & wrong eroded.
One Term More!
With laws that let 'em stand their ground,
Republicans are locked & loaded.

Contraception's now a sin,
Screwing G.M. in the clutch.
Incivility's a virtue,
Homophobic. Out of touch.
Filibusters. Budget scrums.
Ultrasounds & speculums.

Watch the GOP War On Women In Action

Posted by on Thursday, June 14, 2012,
Michigan State Reps. Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield, and Barb Byrum, D-Onondaga, were told today by GOP floor leader R-John Stamas that they wouldn’t be recognized to publicly speak on any matters before the House.

This was after their impassioned attempt to speak out on the floor against abortion bills that not only severely limit the Constitutional right of a woman to obtain an abortion, but actually puts a woman's life at risk! One of the Reps also wondered aloud why is it that only the Ch...

WAR ON WOMEN: Extended Cut

Posted by on Tuesday, March 20, 2012,
This video seems to complement my previous article, just below, perfectly. These women repeat word for word the recent quotes of Republicans who are currently running for office and those involved in their campaigns, GOP elected officials past and present, and Conservative talking heads. Pay attention to the name of each person being quoted; it appears onscreen as their own words are heard through the voice of a woman.

THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE CENTRIST WOMAN

Posted by on Tuesday, March 13, 2012,

I would call myself, if I had to pick a label, a social libertarian, fiscal moderate, and an ecological conservative. I am put off by big-government meddling into people's private lives, excessive spending on wars without funding, and government subsidies to oil corporations who are making record profits while my gas prices remain high and Wall Street speculators make out like bandits.

I am frustrated by the waste of my tax dollars on the burgeoning prison industry, the failed War on Drugs, t...
