TELL CONGRESS: VOTE NO on Deregulation!

Posted by on Wednesday, November 30, 2011,

Massive corporations hate being held accountable when their recklessness and greed hurt our economy, our environment and people in our communities — and they’re spending millions on lobbyists and campaign contributions to put their priorities on top.

So instead of policies that would actually help put Americans back to work, Congress this week is focusing on what the corporate lobbyists want: deregulation. The House of Representatives is set to vote later this week on bills that would sabo...

STOP ATTEMPTS TO CENSOR THE INTERNET!

Posted by on Tuesday, November 29, 2011,

The Senate will soon vote on a bill that would let big corporations censor websites at will.

The bill — the Protect IP Act, or PIPA (S. 968) — is intended to stop online copyright piracy (just like SOPA, its cousin in the House). But PIPA’s authority is so broad it would give corporations unprecedented power to abuse our Internet freedoms. .

In the last month, more than one million people have told Congress to reject PIPA and SOPA..

But we need to keep pushing. Join more than a dozen organ...

On the evening of November 17th, tens of thousands of Occupy Wall Street protesters marched throughout New York City, many making their way on to the Brooklyn Bridge, carrying LED candles and chanting. As Occupiers took the bridge in a seemingly endless sea of people, words in light appeared projected on the iconic Verizon Building nearby.

A few hours later, creater Mark Read, who organized the "bat-signal" project, told Boing Boing why and how he did this, and what technology he used:

"It c...

THE POLICE STATE HAS ARRIVED: An Assault on the Free Press

Posted by on Thursday, November 17, 2011,

"Public Safety" has become the mantra of those who seek to squash dissent and defend the powerful.

The New York Times confirmed what was already reported via twitter by those on the scene at the time. As New York City police cleared the Occupy Wall Street campsite in Zuccotti Park early Tuesday morning, many journalists were blocked from observing and interviewing protesters. Some called it a media blackout and said in interviews that they believed that the police efforts were a deliberate att...

POLICE CAPTAIN RAYMOND LEWIS JOINS PROTESTERS at Zuccotti Park

Posted by on Wednesday, November 16, 2011,
Captain Raymond Lewis, a retired Police Captain from Philadelphia, took his chances to come out in full uniform in a show of support for the Occupy Movement at the re-occupied Zuccotti Park.  This is just a tiny snippet of the on-site interview which I watched live on Ustream on the night of November 15th.  The entire time he was there, it was obvious that the NYPD were trying to figure out what to do about him.  In fact, at one point, a plainsclothes detective came up and challenged ...

Theodore Roosevelt was a long-time leader of the Republican party, and U.S. President (1901-1909)

"The Republican Party has totally abdicated its job in our democracy, which is to act as the guardian of fiscal discipline and responsibility. They're on an anti-tax jihad – one that benefits the prosperous classes."  -- Republican David Stockman, who served as budget director under Reagan.

It's difficult to imagine today, but taxing the rich wasn't always a major flash point of American politic...

CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT to Overturn Citizens United Introduced

Posted by on Monday, November 7, 2011,
The separation of money from politics is key to restoring a healthy democracy. Righting the wrongs of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, which allowed for huge new unregulated flows of corporate political spending, has been a rallying point for many within the 99% Movement.

In response to the outcry, on November 1st, six Democratic senators — Tom Udall (NM), Michael Bennett (CO), Tom Harkin (IA), Dick Durbin (IL), Chuck Schumer (NY), Sheldon Whitehouse (RI), and Jeff Merkely (OR...

U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan ruled on Monday, Oct. 17, 2011 that the Bush administration did not complete a required environmental review when it said the bear's designation as threatened in 2008 could not be used as a backdoor way to control greenhouse gases blamed for global warming. Sullivan's decision directs the Interior Department to respond by Nov. 17 with a timetable for when it will complete the required environmental review. Sullivan left an interim 2008 protection designation...
